Welcome to Uncommon Williamsburg Middle School

Uncommon Williamsburg Middle School began with a 5th grade class of 75 students. Since then, we have grown to serve over 300 students in grades 5 to 8 in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Williamsburg. Upon completing 8th grade, students have the opportunity to continue on to an Uncommon Schools high school for grades 9 to 12.

Uncommon Williamsburg Middle School welcomed its first class in August 2005 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Academics and Culture

Excellence in Learning

We provide all students with a rigorous curriculum that prepares them for college and beyond. We have a longer school day and school year to allow for more learning time, and provide after-school tutoring to ensure that all of our students meet our high academic expectations.

Uncommon Schools NYC provides students with an education experience that combines joy, rigor, and hard work every day. Students are taught that hard work is a prerequisite for success. Uncommon Williamsburg Middle School ensures that all students receive a well-rounded education that will prepare them for success in high school, as well as college and beyond.

Emphasis on College

Uncommon Williamsburg Middle School begins educating students about the importance of college from day one and continues doing so through college readiness activities found in middle and high school. The goal is for freshman year of college to become a natural extension of graduating from high school.

To ensure that every student masters each and every standard, we provide students with a longer school day and longer year. We also provide homework help and after-school tutoring, Saturday School for students who need extra support, and double periods of English and Math daily.

Structure and Order

Uncommon Williamsburg Middle School provides its students with a calm, safe, and orderly environment to maximize learning time. All students wear uniforms, and receive constant feedback for continuous academic and self-development.

Targeted Curriculum and Assessment

Uncommon Williamsburg Middle School develops its curriculum directly from the New York State Learning Standards that ensures students master a core set of basic academic skills before mastering higher-level material. We also use internally developed assessments to build a culture of continuous reflection and improvement.

Enrichment

UWMS provides students with opportunities to go beyond the core academic curriculum to discover new interests.

Reading Royalty

Our reading program, Reading Royalty, encourages our students to read a lot and to read widely. We regularly celebrate students who excel in the program.

Civics Competitions

Our students regularly participate and compete in Civics Competitions on a variety of topics.

Reading Library

At UWMS, we love to read and encourage our students to read as much as they can. To that end, we created a library that we're continuously expanding.
