Safe & Supportive Learning Environment

"Our students are incredibly smart and incredibly creative, and it is up to us to see them, to love them, and to give them opportunities to thrive and grow."
—Ashley Anderson Martin, Assistant Superintendent

Commitment to the Success of Every Student

"The connections I've made with teachers, students, and staff members shaped me as a person and as a student. I still keep in contact with my elementary school teachers, and I will be friends with the classmates I've been with since day one even after college."
—Keisha Marcellin, ULCHS Class of '22

Top-notch Teachers & Staff

"You felt a commitment, focus and drive from the teachers and in the quality of education they provide. Having that interaction with the teachers—that one-on-one personal time—that's one of the main reasons why I fell in love with the school."
—Tamika Marcellin, NYC parent

Yes. Every Uncommon school has an English as a New Language Teacher (ENLT) that provides services to students who are eligible based on annual English proficiency testing. ENLTs are able to provide direct instruction, as well as in class accommodations for students.

Uncommon does not have a bilingual education program. Uncommon Schools teach English to students with linguistically diverse backgrounds through our language immersion program. Students take classes in English with support from their core teachers as well as the ENLT.

When a student is new to New York State, families are asked to complete the home language survey. This survey allows schools to determine if a student needs additional testing to identify their possible ELL status. Once a student is enrolled, the ENLT will administer the New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners (NYSITELL). This test will identify any student that would be eligible for ENL services.

Yes. It is within your right to refuse services once your child is identified as an ELL. This should be done in writing and given to the school.

The NYSITELL places students on one of 5 English proficiency levels (Entering, Emerging, Transitioning, Expanding, or Commanding). If your child is determined to be on the Entering or Emerging level as an ELL, Uncommon provides direct instruction in a small group environment in accordance with New York State mandates. Your child will also receive translations (if necessary) and accommodations in their core subjects to account for their level of English proficiency.

Teachers will provide feedback about your child’s progress in class. Your ENLT can use data from our direct instruction curriculum, Lexia English, to provide specific feedback on how your child is progressing in speaking, listening, and writing in English along with feedback on where your child continues to struggle.

Yes. The school can provide translated correspondence in your home language. ENLTs are able to arrange interpreters for report card conferences and other school based meetings.
